What is a functional capacity evaluation?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a process of objectively assessing an individual's physical capacities and functional abilities.

FCE's are useful in determining:

  • An individual's ability to safely return to work
  • Work restrictions, job modifications, or accommodations
  • The extent to which physical impairments exist
  • The potential ability to perform job duties following acute rehabilitation or a work conditioning/hardening program

How long are functional capacity evaluations?

FCE's are done on a one-to-one basis. They can range in length from 2 hours to 2 days, depending on the type of assessment and the goals of the individual/referral source.
